~ Malic Acid May be Helpful in Fibromyalgia and Other Muscle Pain
Malic acid, is an organic, alpha-hydroxy acid that is sometimes referred to as a fruit acid because it is commonly found in apples and other fruits. Malic acid is also found in plant and animal tissues, and is a key factor in the biochemical energy-producing cycle in cellís mitochondria known as the citric acid or Krebs cycle. Malic acid participates in the production of cellular energy by delivering lactic acid into the Krebs cycle. As a result, malic acid naturally helps clear lactic acid from, and prevent its build-up in, muscle tissue. It is believed that malic acid may be beneficial in treating fibromyalgia.
In one study, conducted in 1992, fibromyalgia patients were randomized to receive a combination of 200 milligrams of malic acid and 50 milligrams of magnesium per tablet (three tablets twice a day) or placebo for four weeks. This was followed by a six-month, open-label trial with dose escalating up to six tablets twice a day. Outcomes measured pain and tenderness as well as functional and psychological factors. While no clear benefit was observed for the malic acid/magnesium combination in the low-dose blinded trial, the open-label trial, at higher doses, showed significant reductions in the severity of all outcome measurements.
The effective doses used in the fibromyalgia studies were 1,200-2,400 mg of malic acid in combination with 300-600 mg of elemental magnesium, daily.
R&D Malic Acid Plus combines nutrients that work together to aid in the reduction of fibromyalgia and other muscle pain. R&D Malic Acid Plus is a pH sensitive, enteric coated tablet to deliver nutrients to the small intestine, protecting and maximizing their activity. R&D Malic Acid Plus provides nutrient support for healthy nerve and muscle function.
The minerals magnesium and potassium are the basis of the production of many enzymes required for normal nerve and muscle function, which aids in the reduction of muscle spasm. Manganese and glucosamine sulfate are nutrients that support and promote ligament and connective tissue strength and health. Thiamin and pyridoxine are B vitamins that help to reduce nerve irritability and soft tissue edema.
R&D Malic Acid Plus provides several natural analgesic nutrients. Dl-Phenylalanine, an amino acid, has been found to inhibit production of enzymes that destroy endorphins, the endogenous painkillers produced by the brain. Valerian root is a well-known herbal muscle relaxant and analgesic. Feverfew herb is a natural anti-inflammatory, often used in migraine headaches and rheumatoid arthritis. White willow bark is a natural source of the anti-inflammatory, salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin.
