4 - 10 grams of MSM daily is the recommended dosage. This is a great price. The potency and purity has been assayed by an independent lab.
From early life in the ancient seas until today, sulfur has been a crucial component of both plants and animals. Algae capture sulfur molecules from volcanic vents on the ocean floor, and when plankton eat algae, dimethylsulfide (DMS) is released into the air, replenishing the ozone layer. There, DMS is energized by sunlight, and forms MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) by oxidation. Rain carries the MSM to earth, where plants readily absorb it, and store it in their roots.
Virtually every fruit, vegetable, grain and nut contains MSM - and so do the animals which consume them. Primitive life forms got their sulfur from MSM and molecules it's made from; some still convert methionine to MSM and vice versa. Later, higher life forms evolved a complex system for getting sulfur from proteins.
The human body synthesizes MSM from dimethylsulfide or molecules that lead to it, which are commonly found in unprocessed food but are lost in processing and storage. Supplementing with MSMŪ provides additional sulfur, beyond that available from proteins, to help meet our total daily needs. These needs are larger whenever we need to repair or replace damaged tissue. MSMŪ is a preferred dietary source of sulfur for many important compounds in the body, including heparin, insulin, co-enzyme A, biotin, methionine, enkaphalin, human growth factor, hemoglobin, calcitonin, fibrinogen and muscle proteins. MSM is used to add needed sulfur to many enzymes that protect and sustain life processes.
Sulfur from MSMŪ can also help form the 'tie-bars' or bonds holding tiny strands of connective tissue together. This may be why people find it improves the flexibility and softness of their skin, which stores MSM. A group of people who regularly used 500 to 2,000 mg MSMŪ per day were protected from sun and wind burn after four hours of summer exposure - their unprotected companions were severely burned.
Particularly in combination with Vitamin C (which is necessary to make collagen), MSMŪ supported healing and sharply reduced inflammation around wounds. Similarly, repair of blood vessel walls has been accelerated by taking 500mg of MSMŪ and 250mg of Vitamin C twice daily for 21 days, resulting in healing of a persistent bruise on the foot.
Collagen is an important part of the tough, fibrous material in cartilage, and MSM may provide nutritional support for collagen production to repair cartilage damaged by arthritis, in addition to its nutritional support for inflammation and associated pain.
MSMŪ can be beneficial for responses to stress: gastrointestinal distress, inflammation of the mucous membranes and allergic reactions. Low levels of MSM have been associated with physical and psychological stress, tissue and organ problems, fatigue, and reduced immune function. 1(12:38 & 12:52) Like DHEA, the body makes less MSM as it gets older. Mature animals generally have blood levels less than 0.5 parts per million (ppm) MSM. Research indicates that a level of at least 1 ppm is optimal for normally healthy animals, and 10 to 20 ppm is beneficial when health is threatened.
Fourteen men and women ages 33 to 59, apparently in good health, who took 250 to 500mg MSMŪ daily for seven to twelve months, to keep their blood levels over 1 ppm, reported feeling better and stronger, with increased endurance, and not one became ill during the study. Competitive athletes taking one to two grams per day in divided doses found that the physical fatigue after a competition lasted only two to three days, rather than the usual eight to ten days.
Marathon runners taking 15 mg per kg body weight per day for at least seven days prior to a race had fewer incidences of severe cramp mg during or after the race. Other people taking MSMŪ have reported increased alertness, and a more stable, upbeat mood.
Daily additions of MSMŪ to feed reduced deaths caused by stress reactions to growing or being transported in crowded, uncomfortable conditions, for chickens from 1 in 10 to 1 in 100, and for fish from 11 in 25 to 1 in 25. One might consider that a good recommendation for people living in today's world to take MSMŪ daily, too!
Suggested use:
One mg per kg body weight per day (typically 50 to 100mg) will replace the amount of MSM which is usually missing in a processed food diet.
Larger amounts (500mg to 2 grams per day or more in divided doses) are appropriate under conditions of stress or ill health.' We recommend taking water-soluble vitamins (B-complex and C) with MSM.
Safety and metabolism:
MSMŪ is stored in several body organs; excess MSMŪ is eliminated as waste from the digestive tract, kidneys and skin. MSMŪ is so non-toxic it can be used to dilute blood. Primates fed more than one gram per kilogram of body weight per day for two years showed no evidence of MSMŪ toxicity.
